"Acathexis" - Kelvin Chew, Nanyang Technological University [School of Art, Design, and Media] Singapore  "This piece investigates the relationship and effects of media, in respect to the many severe natural disasters that happened in recent times.  Taking the string of unfortunate events that hit Japan on Friday March 11, 2011 as a pivot point, this piece serves to represent the mixed emotions and thoughts that the artist had then.  The disaster received one of the most comprehensive documentation in high definition and was making headlines for several months following it.  With the advancement of CGI techniques, there are also blockbuster depictions with uncanny resemblances to the documented scenes of the tsunami.  In addition, reportage from traditional news media, footages of Japan were viral across new online media platforms.  News of Japan was more far-reaching than any previous incidents.  In such conditions, where one would be constantly exposed to the same news and scenes from blockbuster movies, would the emotions of the viewer be dampened?  Shock is a product of surprise, but if one is visually prepared, then would shock be dampened or removed?  And perhaps the diluted degree of experience accounts for insufficient aids rendered?"
